A Pipedream?
Not long ago, most people would have chosen the US over any other country if asked to vote for one that could be considered a beacon for humanity. The term ‘Big Brother'was used with much awe and respect. Funny thing is that the same people would today talk of the US with less than concealed disgust.
The general perception is that the US has been fooling, manipulating, arm-twisting and threatening all who could not stand up to it to do exactly what it wanted them to do. The sole aim being its own benefit. All in the name of democracy, of course.
The US invasion of Iraq, and then Afghanistan, has eroded the confidence of people of the world who held the US in high esteem. Whatever be the proclaimed reason, most people see it as a ploy to get hold of the immense oil reserve in Iraq and build a base in Afghanistan. This would give it a presence in an area that it could not have had a say in earlier, besides providing a boost to its much needed cash reserve. The whiplash effect that followed alienated the US from many nations. Most people view the US, with its recession and recent downgrading, as a sinking ship. A pauper king who is desperately trying to hang on to his crown. And whose subjects live on credit.
Come to think of it, isn’t that how armies fought and won wars 1,000 years, and more, back? Plunder the wealth of other nations – use any rhetoric if needed. Though I doubt if any rhetoric was needed in those days.
